At the beginning of February, Global Fitness gave San Diego Rescue Mission (SD Rescue) a wonderful gift: a truck full of nearly new exercise equipment. With this caring gift to the mission, Global Fitness hopes to show support and give back to the community that has already given us so much. The gifts arrived on February 2, 2018, in an event Donnie Dee, President and CEO of SD Rescue, called “a great day at the San Diego Rescue Mission.” Twenty of the mission’s clients helped unload the truck, moving the equipment to where it will do the most good for San Diego’s homeless population. Mr. Dee promised, “We are going to eliminate homelessness one life at a time and we appreciate you being on our TEAM!!” SD Rescue was founded in 1955 with the mission “To lovingly address the needs of men, women and children experiencing homelessness by sharing the Good News of Salvation and providing a holistic approach to rehabilitation and recovery.” The rescue mission started out as a soup kitchen, offering food and short-term shelter for up to 85 men. As the years went by, facilities expanded to include residencies for homeless women and children. The mission also includes one of the few drug and alcohol rehabilitation programs for the homeless in San Diego County. In the last 12 months, SD Rescue has:
- Sheltered men, women, and children for 157,826 nights.
- Provided the homeless with 399,647 meals.
- Rescued 165 people in need of critical care.
- Collected 2,410,952 pounds of food through Partners for Hunger Relief (their food recovery program).
- Kept 620 children and 1,686 women safe and sheltered overnight.
